Black Jack is more of a 'Jerk with a heart of gold' character, and would help people out pro bono. I find Black Jack to be a far more interesting and entertaining character than the 'asshole doctors' from other series. Some of the stories have fantastical elements like the time he had to treat a ghost in his residence for example, or the time he worked on an Teratogenous Cystoma, which he BROUGHT TO LIFE and named her Pinoko, who would become a recurring character in the manga in various stories. Taken From ANN: Black Jack is the doctor Tezuka wished he could be, one free of the constraints of the modern rules, who can heal and help on his rules. The manga follows Black Jack, a unlicensed surgeon/doctor as he goes through various situations that involve medical conditions, and him curing people for insanely large fees (for the time). Tezuka worked on Black Jack from 1973 to 1983 having written and drawn over 200 stories or chapters for the series. I may not have read or watched much of Osamu Tezuka's stuff (I plan to do so in due time hopefull), however Black Jack may just be my favourite work from him.
